Raising community awareness as the most effective way to combat covid.

Although government and local officials are making considerable efforts, the fight against coronavirus is still far from being won in Madagascar as in many countries. To contribute to fight against this pandemic, Sahanala has embarked on targeted and multichannel awareness-rising campaigns.

A cell broadcast campaign by SMS

As the use of mobile phones is sufficiently democratized in Madagascar, Sahanala has decided to conduct awareness-rising campaigns by SMS to producers and its other collaborators. Over 120,000 SMS messages have been sent to raise awareness of barrier gestures and social distancing in society and on production sites, to inform about what to do in case of symptoms or suspicious cases, how to adopt a healthier life in order to maintain one’s health, and some.

More than 300 awareness-raising posters have been distributed over all sites where Sahanala operates. During its rice and soap distribution campaigns, Sahanala took the opportunity to raise awareness maximum number of people.


While enforcing the rules of social distancing, the teams on the ground explain the importance of barrier actions and prevention measures for local communities.

Awareness-raising is futile as long as the misunderstanding persists. In order to remedy this, Sahanala implemented places two toll-free numbers available 24/7 that local communities can call if they have any question about the Covid-19 health crisis.
